Raising and Lowering the Mast

Methods for Deck-Stepped and Keel-Stepped Masts

We handle mast stepping and unstepping with care to preserve rig tuning and avoid damage to spars and hardware. For deck-stepped masts, an A-frame or crane system is typically used. Keel-stepped masts require more complex handling, including temporary support below decks and precision during lifting. All halyards, stays, and wiring are labeled and secured. Masthead electronics and lights are protected or removed as needed.

Rigging Inspection During Mast Handling

Lowering the mast provides an opportunity to perform close inspection of tangs, spreaders, terminal fittings, and wiring. Any signs of corrosion, deformation, or UV degradation in swaged fittings, wire rope, or terminations are flagged for repair or replacement per ABYC guidelines.

Custom Framing and Ventilation

Securing Against Wind and Snow Load

Covers are tensioned securely using webbing straps and non-abrasive fasteners. For high-latitude storage, framing is reinforced to withstand snow accumulation and dynamic wind loads. We recommend removing canvas dodgers and biminis to reduce windage.
